Overview
Pinewood SEND School is a new-build education project delivered using an offsite construction approach, with fully insulated SIP panels forming a key part of the building envelope.
The façade needed to complement this method of delivery while providing the durability, fire performance and low-maintenance qualities expected of a long-term education setting. Swisspearl fibre-cement cladding was selected to meet these requirements and provide a clean, robust external finish.
Client Challenge
The façade package needed to integrate efficiently with the factory production process without compromising on performance or finish.
Key considerations included:
- coordinating the cladding with individual SIP panel drawings;
- selecting a material capable of withstanding weather and UV exposure;
- supporting the fire-performance requirements of the external wall build-up; and
- reducing unnecessary handling during manufacture and transportation.
The priority was to create a façade solution that worked practically within the wider construction programme from the outset.
Benx Solution
Benx coordinated the Swisspearl façade panels against the individual SIP panel drawings, allowing components to be fabricated and supplied in a sequence suited to the factory production line.
The panels were loaded onto purpose-made stillages, helping to protect the finished material while reducing handling between fabrication and installation.
Swisspearl panels were then face-fixed to a timber batten support grid using the associated profiles required to complete the ventilated rainscreen system.
This coordinated approach helped simplify the manufacturing process while maintaining control over the quality and condition of the façade components.
Visual & Design Commentary
The Swisspearl fibre-cement finish gives the school a clean and considered appearance, with the cladding following the geometry of the prefabricated building elements.
Its restrained finish provides a durable outer layer while keeping the elevations visually cohesive, allowing the façade to feel purposeful rather than overly complex.
Outcomes & Performance Highlights
Efficient Delivery
Coordinating the façade package with the SIP panel drawings helped streamline production and reduced the amount of additional processing required during manufacture.
Durability
Swisspearl fibre cement provides resistance to weathering and UV exposure, helping the façade retain its appearance while supporting a low-maintenance approach.
Fire Performance
The material was selected in part for its fire-resistant characteristics, supporting the wider performance requirements of the external wall system.
Controlled Handling
Purpose-made stillages helped protect the fabricated panels and minimise unnecessary movement, reducing the risk of damage before installation.
Programme Success
Pinewood SEND School was completed in February 2026, with the project delivered on time, within budget and to the client’s approval.
