Scholar Green

Overview

This is a residential refurbishment project in Scholar Green focused on improving the performance and appearance of a detached home through external wall insulation.

While smaller in scale than many retrofit schemes, the project reflects a growing demand for practical home upgrades that improve energy efficiency without dramatically altering the character of the property. The aim was to create a warmer, more efficient home while giving the exterior a cleaner and more modern finish.

The Client Challenge

The homeowner wanted to improve insulation levels and refresh the external appearance of the property through a solution that felt durable, straightforward and visually appropriate for the setting.

Key priorities included:

  • Reducing heat loss and improving internal comfort
  • Updating tired external elevations
  • Delivering a low-maintenance finish suited to long-term residential use
  • Ensuring installation quality across a smaller, detail-sensitive site

Because the property is fully detached, the finished façade would be highly visible from all angles, making consistency in detailing and finish particularly important.

The Benx Solution

The project utilised the Benx Direct Fix Mineral Wool system finished with Envirosil silicone render.

Mineral wool insulation was selected to improve the thermal performance of the building envelope while maintaining breathability within the wall structure. The direct fix approach also helped keep installation efficient and well suited to a live residential environment.

To complete the façade, an Envirosil silicone render finish was applied across the elevations, creating a crisp and consistent appearance with improved resistance to weather exposure and general wear over time.

Working alongside Next Energy, careful attention was given to corners, openings and junctions to ensure a clean overall finish across the property.

Visual & Design Commentary

The completed façade gives the property a noticeably sharper appearance without feeling overly modern or out of place within the surrounding street.

The silicone render finish helps unify the elevations, while the neat treatment around windows and rooflines gives the building a more refined overall look. Rather than dramatically changing the character of the home, the refurbishment feels like a considered upgrade that improves the building visually and practically at the same time.

Outcomes & Performance Highlights

Improved Comfort

The upgraded external envelope helps the property retain heat more effectively, creating a more comfortable internal environment for the resident.

Refreshed Appearance

The new rendered façade provides a cleaner and more contemporary finish, replacing weathered external surfaces with a brighter and more cohesive look.

Long-Term Durability

The Envirosil render system provides a robust external finish designed to withstand ongoing weather exposure with minimal maintenance requirements.

Project Reflection

This shows how residential retrofit projects deliver meaningful improvements when the right system and detailing are applied.

Through a straightforward but carefully executed insulation upgrade, the project has improved both the efficiency and appearance of the property, creating a home that is better suited to modern living while remaining true to its residential setting.
